History of Banu Hashim

Mecca was the traditional center of Arabia in both religion and trade; it was the crossroad of commercial transit between east and west, north and south.

Abu Talib’s clan, the Banu Abd Manaf, the most influential in all Arabia, was a part of the great Quraysh tribe. Banu Hashim is one of the clans of the Quraysh tribe.

Out of four sons of Abd Manaf, Hashim is very well known. He was the great grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad and along with the Banu Abd Shams, Banu Al-Muttalib, and Banu Nawfal clans comprises the Banu Abd al-Manaf section of the Quraysh.

Qusayy, Hashim’s grandfather had brought the tribe of Quraysh to position dominance in pre-Islamic Mecca. He becomes the guardian of the Ka’bah and unites his tribe, the Quraysh.

Due to his ability to manage things well, Hashim ibn Abd Manaf rose to be the supreme leader of the Quraysh.

During the time when Hashim was a chief of Mecca and the custodian of the Ka’bah, Mecca trade flourish in a big way.  He organized two trade caravans, one from Mecca to Syria and another from Mecca to Yemen.

Banu Hashim are an Arab dynasty that ruled the holy city of Mecca, in modern day Saudi Arabia, almost without interruption from the 10th century until 1924, when they were deposed by Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud, whose descendants continue to rule Saudi Arabia to the present day.
